Cross-Country Road Trip Day 2

Cross-Country Road Trip Day 2

We left Missoula and drove to Billings where we hoped to see the Our Lady of the Rockies. The road, however, was closed and we didn’t know why. Looking it up online, we found that you have to take a bus to the top and it didn’t start running for another week. Bummer!

We proceeded on the highway and saw a sign for Pompeii’s Pillars, which is a National Monument managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). On a whim, we stopped to see what it was about. It’s a big sandstone formation that has hundreds of markings and petroglyphs, including William Clark’s signature. In spite of the high heat, I climbed 2/3 of the way up in order to see that signature, while Wanda waited on a bench in a shaded area.

At lunchtime, we stopped at the Olive Garden and got the unlimited soup and salad special (I had the chicken gnocchi soup).

It was a long four hour drive after lunch to Miles City, Montana. The stretch of highway didn’t have much in the way of gas and by the time we got to a gas station (across the street from our motel), I only had about 12 miles worth of fuel left in the car. My car kept screaming at me that I only had X number of miles before I ran out of fuel, so that made me even more anxious! I did find out that my gas tank will take slightly more than 12 gallons of fuel, though.
